Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Project Program Overview

Intensive I
Tentative Dates: March 2 - 21, 2009
Location: UBC, Pt Grey Campus, Vancouver, BC
Objectives: This intensive onsite component is offered to support orientation, skill review and individual assessment through an interactive workshop format. Topics and skill review will fall within the following themes: Assessment, Clinical Skills, Clinical Management, Pharmacology, Communication and Professionalism, all relating to the core competencies for midwifery practice in Canada. The following will be highlighted: Canadian model of midwifery (evidence based practice, informed choice, and choice of birth place – home, hospital, or birth centre), history taking, midwifery care during antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum phases, and communication with women and professional colleagues. In addition, skill review will include physical exam of woman and newborn, venipuncture, suturing, and emergency care. Participants will participate in clinical skill evaluations (OSCEs) and complete a written general midwifery knowledge exam in order to identify learning needs. Candidates will have individual learning plans developed based upon their performance.
Community I
Tentative Dates: March 30 - June 5, 2009
Location: Community / Region / Home
Objectives: Community I is designed to meet individual learning needs as identified during the Intensive I and portfolio intake assessment. In addition, Community I introduces candidates to midwifery practice in Canada through a virtual midwifery practice and includes jurisdictional specific details in midwifery care. Participants will be expected to address discrete theory or clinical learning needs over the 10 weeks depending on their learning plan. These may be addressed in midwifery, nursing or medical practices within their home communities or through other resources available. Online courses will include the Virtual Midwifery Practice, Pharmacology for Midwives and Communication in Health Care. These on-line courses and are under development. Detailed course descriptions will be available early in 2009.
Intensive II
Dates: June 8 - 13, 2009
Location: UBC, Pt Grey Campus, Vancouver, BC
Objectives: Participants will complete a 3 – 4 day schedule of clinical skill (OSCE) and written exams covering core competencies for midwifery practice in Canada. A passing grade is required to proceed to Community II (clinical clerkship) and to the CMRE. One opportunity for retakes can be arranged for candidates who fail to demonstrate competency in 1- 3 stations or the written exam.
Community II
Dates: June 15 - September 5, 2009
Location: a Canadian Community
Objectives: This twelve-week clinical placement offers candidates an opportunity to gain experience working in a Canadian midwifery practice under the supervision of a Registered Midwife. Participants will be fully integrated into the practice and will provide care to women and their newborns within the provincial framework for practice including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care. Participants will attend births in both home and hospital settings. Midwifery preceptors trained in principles of adult education will facilitate integration of participants into their community and provide culturally sensitive direction, support, mentorship and feedback to participants in collaboration with a UBC clerkship tutor. Mid-term and final evaluations will be completed. A passing grade is required to proceed to the CMRE.
Eligibility for the Registration Exam: October 2009
Upon successful completion of the MMBP, candidates are eligible to take the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE).
